Laura watched Johnny Owens swagger across the empty bar and into the office as she finished a stock check. He was wearing his golfing outfit – a red and green checked polo shirt that strained across his massive back, black trousers and two-tone black and white shoes. On his head was a flat cap he’d managed to find in an almost identical check to his polo shirt. He looked ridiculous, but not many people were brave enough to say so. Taz and Ricky were waiting for him – both in foul moods, which was hardly surprising. One of the bar staff, a student called Cerys, had shown Laura the previous day’s article.

Now Laura was desperate to know what Taz and Ricky would say. The story had come as a shock. She thought back to a rainy afternoon the previous summer, when Taz had encouraged her to play a trick on his wife; asked Laura to set up email accounts in her name and send explicit messages to another fake account. Explicit messages that he had dreamed up with Laura – high on coke and half a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. The thought that those fake messages had caused such problems made her feel ill.

‘Cerys?’ she called.

A young woman poked her head up from behind the bar. She was short, with long curly black hair, sparkling honey-coloured eyes and curves that made Laura feel like a little boy in comparison.

‘Yeah?’ she asked in her singsong Scouse accent.

‘We need to stock up Corona, Beck’s and Bulmers, and then look at the spirits.’

‘Will do,’ Cerys replied with a big smile.

‘And put those boobs away,’ joked Laura. ‘I’m getting jealous.’

Cerys grinned. ‘They say more than a handful’s a waste – but I’ve never had any complaints!’

‘I bet,’ said Laura, grinning back at her.

She watched as Cerys turned to the glass-doored fridges behind the bar, her top riding up to show the tattoo in the small of her back.

‘Put the bum away too,’ Laura told her.

She turned and headed for the office, which lay behind the bar. It was down a narrow corridor that led to the rear fire exit. The door was only slightly ajar, but it was enough for Laura to hear everything. She leaned back against the wall and listened …
